I’m heading to StarTalk Live! tomorrow, and I’ve been excitedly anticipating the event since buying the tickets about a month ago. As kismet would have it, I’ve come across an astronomy related Cockney rhyming slang, and thought it’d be the perfect one to post for this week.
Undoubtedly, the Cockney rhyming slang “Jodrell” owes its origins to Jodrell Bank Observatory. Jodrell Bank is home to the Lovell Radio Telescope, which the wallpaper’s silhouette is based on.
The telescope became operational in mid-1957, just in time for the launch of Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite. The telescope was the only one in the world able to track Sputnik’s booster rocket by radar, thus shooting it and Jodrell Bank Observatory to fame.
So if you want to deck your tech with some astronomy, that’s a bit risqué, then grab a wallpaper from below.
